Eco-driving is worth your while!

Eco-driving is a clever way to drive – it contributes to the reduction of fuel consumption, gas emissions and car accidents.

What is eco-driving?

Eco-driving is a clever way to drive – it contributes to the reduction of fuel consumption and gas emissions which cause the greenhouse effect and also reduces the number of car accidents.

Eco-driving can be easily implied by passenger vehicle drivers and professional bus and lorry drivers alike.

Eco-driving is defined as prudent, moderate and safe driving with low engine revolutions (1,200-2,500 rpm) and gentle acceleration.

Benefits
  • 10-25% fewer accidents due to improved safety on the road
  • Fuel consumption reduced by 10-25% which leads to reduced pollution due to gas emissions
  • Significant reduction in sound pollution
  • Energy, maintenance and insurance costs are reduced
  • Greater comfort for drivers and the passengers in both public and private vehicles
  • Drivers and passengers of both public and private vehicles are more comfortable
  • Passengers have confidence in public transportation means practicing eco-driving methods
  • Travel time is identical when compared to conventional driving methodology
Golden rules
  • Change gears when between 2000 – 2500 rpm
  • Drive at a steady speed using the highest possible gear
  • Avoid unnecessary braking or gear changes
  • Predict traffic conditions
  • Decelerate smoothly
  • Switch off the engine for short stops (more than 30 seconds)
  • Check tyre pressure at least once a month
  • Maintain the car regularly and properly paying particular attention to the tyres
  • Avoid unnecessary cargo and the use of roof racks
  • Avoid opening windows unnecessarily and the placement of car spoilers
  • Use air conditioning prudently (use only when necessary and the thermostat should not be adjusted below 23oC)
  • When driving uphill use the highest possible gear and maintain full throttle
  • When driving downhill take advantage of the speed of the car and avoid using the accelerator pedal
  • Driving on windy roads: Decelerate smoothly before effecting a turn avoiding braking if at all possible
